Do they mean Tagalog??? (I don’t think “Filipino” is a language…)
Hello Mimi :)
Based on the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the national language of the Philippines is in fact called Filipino. “Article XIV, Section 6: The national language of the Philippines is Filipino. As it evolves, it shall be further developed and enriched on the basis of existing Philippine and other languages.”
However, Filipino is largely based on Tagalog and maybe that’s what confused you. Filipino is different from Tagalog as Tagalog can mean the dialect spoken in many other parts of the country or the Tagalog ethnic group.
I was also recently corrected on it which is why some of the older posts are still tagged as Tagalog. Working on changing that though. Thanks for your question! :)
Best, Antonette
